Rwanda’s history has been tumultuous, but in this new millennium the Rwandan people and their government are establishing a stable, independent and progressive African nation. The progress of this small country is at a critical juncture. Investing in its future, while honoring the beauty of its past can only be fruitful for its people. The survival of its indigenous beliefs, language, customs and art is vital. In a country that was so devastated in every way only 15 years ago, it is easy to understand why little attention has been paid to creative potential. Over 70% of Rwanda’s population is under 30 years of age. The country is overwhelmed with orphaned children and youth. The lack of resources, creative and practical, is serious.

Ballet Rwanda was founded by Caroline Joan Peixoto, as one means by which the creative potential of Rwandan children and youth can flourish.
Caroline Joan Peixoto is a classically trained ballerina with over 10 years of instruction and performance experience. She trained with Marcella Contessi (Theatre Lirico of Milano) in Petaluma, California, and has danced at Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre and at Steps on Broadway and Peridance Center in New York City. She studied Social Sciences at Fordham University and Thomas Edison College.

It is her dream to one day have an open arts center where children and adults can be free of social stigmas and explore their creativity.
